Our Speciality
Children, adolescents and adults with disorders that affect the brain present with unique and complex problems, the impact of which can be felt across cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and academic domains. Often we are left with many unanswered questions regarding the impact that a particular condition has on a child’s ability to function in school and in the community. Knowing how to best address the child’s needs is essential in order to promote optimal personal functioning.
As a neuropsychologist, I specialize in the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents and adults who are experiencing difficulties that are the result of either medical or mental health related issues. Typical concerns include learning issues, attention problems, or medical/neurological disorders. The purpose of what I do is to help you as a parent or an individual to understand the unique areas of strength and weakness that you or your child present with and the factors that may be responsible for your concerns. This will help me to understand and communicate to you the impact that the problem areas are having on academic, vocational and social abilities and to work with you to develop a treatment plan that will reduce the impact that these problems have on you or your child’s ability to perform more effectively. We will work to develop a treatment plan that includes recommendations for the patient and family, those who are involved in the patient’s treatment (e.g., physicians & psychologists) and school personnel (e.g., test modifications or specialized tutoring).
Psychological treatment is provided to children, adolescents, and adults. The treatment is targeted to improve those areas that are preventing the person from functioning more effectively. For children and adolescents the focus is often on problematic behaviors (e.g., poor attention, disorganization, & oppositionality), difficulties with peers, and academic problems. For adults, the focus of treatment is often on relationship issues and work-related problems. The treatment is done on a once-weekly basis using an integrative approach that includes Cognitive Behavioral and Psychodynamic principles and techniques. For children and adolescents there is a requirement that the parents or legal guardians participate in the treatment on a regular basis.
